Review: W Bali – Seminyak

8.2/10

Excellent

Best Bali Hotels score

The W is the Seminyak hotel to book if you want a big room and a scene. Even the cheapest room is 64 square metres, the breakfast is excellent, and there’s a new beach club on the sand.

The catch is the bill. It’s roughly double Alila next door at entry level, so book it for the fun, not for the value.

  • Service

Warm and fun, and the buggies are always around.

  • Food

One of the best breakfasts in Seminyak. Dinner at Fire is good but dear.

  • Pools

A big, terraced pool with sea views, open 24 hours. Loungers go early.

  • Rooms

The biggest entry rooms in Seminyak. The villas are starting to look their age.

  • Location

On the sand at Petitenget, in beach-club country. The sea is for looking at.

  • Value

You get a lot of room, but it charges at the very top of the 5-star band.

Things I loved

  • The size of the rooms. The entry rooms are 64 square metres, with a balcony. That’s bigger than the suites at some 5-stars, and it’s the best argument for paying W prices.
  • Breakfast. It’s the thing everyone talks about, and the spread at Starfish Bloo is huge. I think it’s one of the best breakfasts in Seminyak, alongside Alila’s.
  • The service. Staff are warm and fun, and the buggies run you around the site. I’d put it with the best service in Seminyak.
  • The WET pool. It’s big, terraced and curving, with sea and sunset views, and it’s open 24 hours. It’s a pool for hanging out, not for laps.
  • Alunê. As of September 2026, the new beach club has replaced Woobar on the sand. There are private cabanas with their own jacuzzis, which you can book ahead with a minimum spend.
  • Sunsets on the doorstep. You’re on the sand at the Petitenget end, with Potato Head, Alila and Eat Street all close by.

What could be better

  • The price. It charges at the very top of the 5-star band.
  • The villas are showing their age. The standard rooms hold up fine. It’s the Oasis one-bedroom villas that feel dated, with older bathrooms, a smell in the bathroom and murky tap water. The hotel opened in 2011.
  • The beach. It’s a surf beach with big waves and rips, and litter washes up, mostly from November to March. It’s better for surfing than swimming, so the pools do the swimming.
  • Loungers go early. The pool runs like a beach club by late morning, and the beach daybeds are first come, first served.
  • It can be loud. A beach club on the sand and party crowds in the corridors aren’t for light sleepers. It’s not every night, but if you want an early one, I’d book somewhere calmer.
  • It’s not one for small kids. There’s no kids club to speak of, whatever some booking sites say. With little ones, I’d book from my Seminyak family list.
  • No Michelin Key. The Legian and Desa Potato Head both got one in 2026. The W didn’t.

Rooms

There are 233 rooms, suites and villas. The rooms and suites are in the main building, and the 75 villas each have their own pool. Marriott and the hotel use different names for the same rooms, so I’ve given both where they differ.

  • Superior Garden View (Wonderful Garden Escape): 64 square metres on floors 1 to 4, with a balcony, a bath and a king or two queens. It sleeps three adults, or a family of four.
  • Premier Ocean Facing View (Spectacular Ocean Facing Escape): the same 64 square metres, on the upper floors, facing the sea. On levels 4 and 5, some have a skylight in the bathroom. As a couple, I’d book this.
  • Escape Suite (Marvelous Suite): 127 square metres, with a king, a sofa bed, separate living and dining rooms, skylights and a terrazzo tub. It sleeps three.
  • Penthouse Suite (WOW Suite): 274 square metres, with a king room, a two-queen room, two bathrooms and a living and dining area.
  • Penthouse Bi-Level Suite (Extreme WOW Suite): 532 square metres over the top two floors, with two king bedrooms, a kitchen, a steam room and a private chef.
  • Oasis One Bedroom Villa: about 225 square metres including the deck, with a king and a plunge pool. It sleeps three. These are the dated ones, so I’d ask what’s been refurbished before booking one.
  • Oasis Two Bedroom Villa: 352 square metres, with a king room, a two-queen room, two bathrooms and a big sundeck.
  • Oasis Three Bedroom Villa: about 625 square metres, with three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a dining room and the biggest deck of the lot.

Cots are free for under-2s in every room.

As a couple, I’d book a Premier Ocean Facing room on level 4 or 5. For three mates, a Superior Garden View with two queens. For four, I’d book two rooms, or the Penthouse Suite if you want to stay together. I’d only book a one-bedroom villa if the hotel confirms in writing that it’s been refreshed.

Pools

The WET pool is the centre of everything. It’s large and terraced, curving through the middle of the site with views out to sea, and it’s open around the clock.

It’s a scene, not a quiet swim. By about 11 am the loungers are gone, so go early or head down to the beach cabanas.

The villas have their own pools, and that’s where you go for privacy. I’d rather have a villa pool here than fight for a lounger.

Food and bars

  • Starfish Bloo is the main restaurant, open from breakfast until late. Breakfast is the highlight, and the Sunday brunch is popular, so book it ahead.
  • Fire is the steakhouse, open from lunch. It’s good, but dear for what it is.
  • Alunê replaced Woobar in September 2026, with seafood, frozen bowls, sunset cocktails and live music. It’s too new for me to say whether it’s as good as Woobar was.
  • W Lounge and the WET Deck pool bar run until midnight, and room service runs 24 hours.

I’d have breakfast and one brunch in the hotel, then eat out. Eat Street is under 1 km away, about a 10-minute walk.

There’s also the AWAY Spa, open 24 hours, a 24-hour gym and, since September 2026, a Club Lacoste padel club with two courts.

Location

The W is on the sand at the Petitenget end of Seminyak, with no road to cross to the beach. This is the beach-club end, with Potato Head, Alila and The Samaya all nearby.

Eat Street and the restaurants on Jalan Petitenget are about a 10-minute walk, or a short Grab. The footpaths are patchy, and the traffic around here is terrible in the afternoon.

The airport is about 30 to 40 minutes away, and 60 to 90 in late-afternoon traffic. Morning and late flights are much easier.

The beach is wide, and the sunsets are some of the best in Bali. Only swim between the red and yellow flags, and never after dark.

Overall

The W is still the most fun of the big Seminyak hotels. The rooms are huge, the breakfast is excellent, and the new beach club has freshened the place up. But the villas need a refresh.

I’d book a Premier Ocean Facing room. Honestly, though, I think Alila is the better hotel for most couples. I put them head to head in my Seminyak luxury guide.

Book it if you’re a couple or mates who want a big room, a buzzing pool and a beach club on the doorstep. Skip it if you want a quiet pool and an early night, a sea to swim in or a kids club.

Alternatives nearby

  • Alila Seminyak. On the same beach, calmer, with sunset infinity pools and an adults-only pool. The entry rooms are about half the W’s price. Pick it for the sunset, not the party.
  • The Legian Seminyak. All suites, quiet and grown-up, with a Michelin Key. It’s for when calm matters more than a scene.
  • Desa Potato Head. A short walk up the beach, with an even bigger scene and a Michelin Key. Pick it if the beach club is the whole point.
