Review: The Laguna, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa
8.6/10
Excellent
Best Bali Hotels score
The Laguna is the resort I’d book in Nusa Dua. The lagoon pools wind past your door, and in a Lagoon Access room your morning swim starts at the terrace steps.
A full renovation finished in 2023, so nothing looks tired. It’s best for couples, and for families whose kids are old enough not to need a kids club, because there isn’t one.
- Pools
Seven saltwater lagoons winding through the whole resort. Nothing in Nusa Dua matches it.
- Couples
An adults-only beach club pool, and a resort that feels calm, not crowded.
- Service
Some of the best service in Nusa Dua.
- Location
On the beach inside the gated area, a short walk from Bali Collection.
- Rooms
Fully redone in 2023. Lagoon Access rooms let you swim straight out from your terrace.
- Food
Good breakfast and a great beach grill, at Nusa Dua prices.
- Value
Full 5-star money for a resort with no kids club.
- Kids
No kids club. Fine for teens, hard work with under-10s.
Things I loved
- The lagoons. Seven saltwater lagoon pools, about 5,000 square metres of water, with waterfalls and two sand-bottomed beach pools. They’re the reason the hotel exists.
- The swim-up rooms. Ground-floor Lagoon Access rooms open straight into the lagoon. I don’t think anyone in Nusa Dua does it better.
- It’s been fully redone. Every room, the lobby and the restaurants were rebuilt, with the last of the work finished in 2023. The rooms are spotless.
- Kulkul Beach House. The beach club has a 12-metre adults-only pool and cabanas on the sand. It’s the quiet corner couples are after, with DJ sets on Friday and Saturday evenings.
- The staff. I think the service is some of the best in Nusa Dua.
- The size. At 287 rooms it’s big enough for six restaurants and bars, but it never feels like a small town.
What could be better
- No kids club. The hotel runs a few kids’ activities, like batik printing, but there’s no club and no drop-off. You can pay a daily fee to use the Westin’s kids club next door.
- Thin walls. Soundproofing between rooms is poor, especially with a connecting door. Light sleepers should pack earplugs.
- The entry room is small. The Deluxe is about 36 square metres. That’s fine for two, and tight with a cot.
It’s not cheap, and it’s not a family resort. But as a couple, I wouldn’t book anywhere else in Nusa Dua.
Rooms
All 287 rooms, suites and villas were refitted by July 2023. The look mixes Balinese and nautical: embroidered headboards and shiplap walls.
- Deluxe Garden View or Lagoon View: about 36 square metres on floors 2 to 4, with a king or twins. Two adults and a baby at most, and no extra bed.
- Deluxe Lagoon Access: the same room on the ground floor, with a terrace that steps straight into the lagoon. You’re paying for the terrace, not more space.
- Deluxe Studio: about 48 square metres, with a living area, a tub and a separate shower. It sleeps three, so a couple and one child fits.
- Deluxe Studio Lagoon Access: the Studio on the ground floor, opening onto the lagoon. Book this one.
- Executive Suite: about 60 square metres, with a separate living and dining room, a balcony off the bedroom and a butler. It sleeps three.
- Lagoon Access Suite: about 60 square metres on the ground floor, with the lagoon off the terrace. It sleeps three.
- Deluxe Ocean View Suite: about 158 square metres over two levels, on the third floor, with a sofa bed and a side-on view of the sea.
- Presidential Suite: two bedrooms over two levels, with its own lagoon pool, a kitchen, a grand piano and a butler.
- Pool Villas: a handful of one- and two-bedroom villas, each with a private pool and a butler. Villa stays include airport transfers and afternoon tea.
As a couple, I’d book the Deluxe Studio Lagoon Access. It’s the same swim-out terrace as the Deluxe, with a third more room.
For a family of four, no Deluxe or Studio fits you all. I’d book two connecting Lagoon Access rooms and ask for the connecting door when you book. If you want one front door, the Two Bedroom Pool Villa sleeps six.
Pools and kids
The lagoons are the whole show, and the sandy beach pools are where little ones paddle. There’s a shallow kids’ pool too, but no waterslide.
For families, the catch is that there’s no kids club, and no teens club either. You can pay to use the Westin’s kids club, about 100 metres up the beach.
With toddlers, remember the lagoon starts at your terrace on the ground floor. That’s the appeal, and it’s also a door you’ll be watching all week.
Food
Breakfast at Banyubiru is a big buffet with Indonesian counters and a show kitchen. It’s good, but it can be hit and miss, with some dishes served cold.
Arwana is the one I’d book for dinner. It’s a beachfront grill doing seafood and dry-aged meats. Cornerstone Deli does homemade ice cream, and de Balé runs a Ramayana dance on Thursday nights.
For a night out of the resort, Bali Collection is a short walk away.
Location
The Laguna is inside the gated Nusa Dua area, right on the sand, with no road to cross. The Westin is next door to the north, and Bali Collection is a short walk south.
The paved beach path runs past the front, so you can walk for kilometres in either direction. Just don’t expect street life. Nusa Dua is quiet and manicured, and anywhere else in Bali is a taxi ride.
Trinity Courts opened in July 2026, so you can now book tennis, padel and pickleball courts.
Overall
The Laguna is my top pick in Nusa Dua, and the swim-up rooms are why. It’s calm, it’s been fully renovated, and the staff are a big part of the stay.
Book it if you’re a couple, or a family with kids who can swim on their own, and you’ll book Lagoon Access. Skip it if you’ve got under-10s and want a few hours to yourself each day.
Alternatives nearby
- The St. Regis Bali Resort. Next level for a honeymoon, with butlers and a lagoon of its own.
- The Reserve at Paradisus. The 16-and-over section of an all-inclusive. It’s the better deal if you eat and drink a lot.
- Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua. Swim-out Pool Access rooms with the club lounge, plus a kids club. It’s a bigger, busier resort, and the lagoon isn’t as good.
